Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' [carnivorous]
DESCRIPTION
Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' is an elegant hybrid butterwort prized for its elongated, slightly pointed leaves that form a striking, symmetrical rosette in vibrant lime to chartreuse green. Each leaf is coated in a sticky, glandular surface that glistens in the light and effortlessly traps small insects, making this carnivorous plant both functional and ornamental. Unlike many other carnivorous plants, ‘Aphrodite’ maintains its vivid appearance year-round and produces delicate, violet-pink flowers that rise above the foliage on slender stems. Compact and easy to grow, it thrives in bright indirect light and high humidity, making it ideal for windowsills, terrariums, or carnivorous plant collections. Its clean lines and soft coloration lend a graceful, almost sculptural presence to any plant display.
Pinguicula, or butterworts, are carnivorous, semi-succulent plants. Their broad leaves are sticky and sweet smelling to gnats and other small, flying insects. These insects land on, and stick to, the leaves where glands rapidly secrete digestive fluids. This fluid is then reabsorbed by the plant after the prey item is digested.
Pinguicula need partial sun and lots of water. As bog plants, the soil should constantly be moist. They prefer shallow but wide pots as they don't root deeply at all. However, they love to offset and will fill the space available to them given time. If given too much light, or allowed to get too dry, butterworts go dormant, replacing their thin, broad leaves with thick, succulent leaves. In this state, they don't eat insects and can tolerate slightly drier conditions. Decrease the amount of light they're receiving and give them more water to break this dormancy.
PLANT SIZING & APPEARANCE
Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
